PackRat Interventions: FAQ & Information

“Why is it so hard for me to organize?”
•Time
•Lack of Focus
•There’s just too much of it
•Feeling stuck
•It’s too much work to organize it all
•I might need it, so I cannot put it away or I’ll lose it
“What do I do with my sentimental items, like the box full of spelling bee awards, family jewelry, and childhood toys?”
•Spend some time with each item: Can this item be pulled out of the box and be placed elsewhere for you to enjoy it?
•If your answer is Yes, find a place for it outside the box, away from the clutter.
•If your answer is No, ask yourself if there is some way you can preserve the memory without necessarily keeping the item? How is this item enriching my life right now?
“I have two bookshelves full of books, including some I’ve read already but may want to read again some day. But there’s no room for new books. What do I do?”
•Take time with each book that you’ve read, and decide which ones are really important for you to keep.
•When do you foresee re-reading these books?
•Can you part with these books for now, and re-acquire them later when you want to re-read? (i.e. from library or used bookstore)
“I have way too much stuff. Just thinking about doing something with it feels too overwhelming. How can I do it?”
•As you consider whether to tackle your stuff, remember that it doesn’t all have to be organized in one sitting.
•Set aside a block of time in your schedule - either once a day or once a week, when you can just focus on organization.
•Start with just one small part that needs work, and don’t move on to another part until you finish with the first.
“If I let go of my grandmother’s loom, I will miss having something so special from her.”
•How can you preserve the memory associated with your grandmother?
•Take a picture.
•Draw a picture.
•Write about when you first received the loom.
•If relevant, create one final piece before parting with it.
•Will your special memories of your grandmother disappear if the loom disappears?
•Can you imagine the loom being useful to a new person?
